Note: This page contains a brief overview of how the horde night works in the game. It will be expanded with more information over time.
Overview[]
If you use the game defaults then every 7 days there will be a horde night. On the first horde night 10 zombies will arrive to attack you and/or your base.
The current in game day number can be viewed by going to your inventory (TAB key) and looking in the top right corner. The day number will be in red when it is the horde night.
The horde night during the later stages of the game will have more zombies that arrive in waves.
The arrival of the horde zombies will be announced with a zombie roar saying the word "brains" just after 7pm so be ready!
A red skull will appear at the top middle of your screen to indicate the zombie horde has arrived.
The red skull will disappear when the horde night zombie attack is over. There may still be some stragglers that arrive late to the party.
Horde Night Strategy[]
The best strategy to survive the horde night, especially during early game, is to stand in the middle of an area you have surrounded with "Refuse Horse" (spikes). This means to get to you the zombies must first get through the spikes and you can pick them off one by one. Most of them will die due to the spikes but some may survive by jumping over them to get to you. Be ready to defend yourself!
See the image that shows how to prepare an area to stand in. It shows how there are 3 layers of spikes and some left not fully built so you can get into the center and build the last remaining defenses from the outside in.
In the later game horde nights you can use your guns to pick off the zombies as they try and get through your spikes.
Horde Night Advanced Builds[]
Later in the game you can build a more advanced setup with cement foundations, lighting and many spikes. An example is below:

Horde Night Waves[]
As the game progresses each horde night has more zombies (up to a limit). They will arrive in waves.
End of the Horde Night[]
When the horde night zombie attack ends the red skull will disappear from the top middle of your screen.
Be aware that there may still be a few zombies running to your location for you to take care of.
After the Horde Night[]
At the end of the horde night attack you can remove a single path of spikes to get back out using the "Construction Hammer". Spikes you remove using this method will return any materials you used to create them (3x "Log").
You should also check if any of your spikes need to be repaired by holding the "Construction Hammer" and looking at them. If the bar is not full hold down the right mouse button to repair them. It does not take any materials to repair them.
You might also need to rebuild some of the spikes as the zombies can and will destroy them.
Known Issues[]
If the horde night starts and you immediately quit the game then rejoin the horde night will no longer be taking place for this cycle.
